SUMMARY:Freedom Forum 2018: Testify: Memoir as a Tool for Building History
DESCRIPTION:Can memoir become a tool for action? Is there a way that a living literature by those whose voices have been silenced can make its way into the canon – to be taught in high schools\, colleges and universities; to be circulated side by side with the writings of those who are already acknowledged by the establishment? \nAs the Long Island representative of a state-wide initiative coordinated by the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy\, Herstory Writers workshop will partner with the Humanities Institute of Stony Brook University\, Building Bridges in Brookhaven\, and People Power of Patchogue\, to stage a day-long Freedom Forum\, featuring grass roots literature produced by Long Island’s most vulnerable and isolated populations.  Kathy Engel will be the featured poet and activist for the day.

SUMMARY:Ghost Fishing Installation: Unveiling & Inaugural Reading
DESCRIPTION:The public art installation Ghost Fishing opens on Monday\, September 10th\, 5-7pm with a blessing of the plants and the poems offered by Shinnecock Nation elder Denise Silva-Dennis\, followed by readings from a few of the poets and organizers. Kathy Engel’s poem “Return” is featured in one of the windows. \nEarlier in the day\, a variety of plants will have been introduced into garden boxes in each of the windows\, many of them native to Puerto Rico. This choice reflects a recognition of the legacy of environmental and climate injustice that has been visited on the people of that island and the diasporic Puerto Rican community here in New York City.

DESCRIPTION:Come to Book Culture on 112th to celebrate the release of Hassan Najmi’s first English translation of his poetry collection\, The Blueness of the Evening. \nHassan will be joined by a panel consisting of Madeleine Dobie\, Kathy Engel\, Julio Ramos\, and Mbarek Sryfi. \nHassan Najmi\, born in Ben Ahmed in 1960\, now resides in Rabat. He is the author of two novels and ten poetry collections. His poetry has been translated into more than ten languages and he has himself translated many poets into Arabic\, including Giuseppe Ungaretti\, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen\, Philippe Jaccottet\, Yannis Ritsos\, and Anna Akhmatova. \nMadeleine Dobie is Professor of French and Comparative Literature\, Columbia University. \nKathy Engel is Associate Arts Professor and Chair of of the Department of Art & Public Policy\, Tisch School of the Arts\, NYU. \nJulio Ramos is Professor Emeritus of Latin American Literature at the University of California- Berkeley. \nMabarek Sryfi is translator and Lecturer in Foreign Lanuages at the University of Pennsylvania.
